Throughout it's long history the woodcut print has been both an
informative and expressive medium. Flat color, pattern and line
have yielded images that are religious, simplistic, chaotic and stylized.
I explore an aspect of this medium not often considered: the possibility
of a fluid, painterly woodcut print. The resulting lyrically abstracted work
is nature based. Using, reusing and cropping my hand carved blocks,
I layer both transparent and opaque oil based inks to develop my
imagery. Unlike traditional editioned works, each print is unique. Subject
matter is not predetermined. The carving process is intuitive without
knowledge of the resulting prints. It is in the printing and overprinting that
the imagery is developed and refined.
